How the NBA Playoff Bracket Simulator Works

The TankOdds NBA Playoff Bracket Simulator pulls live conference standings from the ESPN API each time the page loads, so seeds always reflect the current regular season. Seeds are set by win percentage within each conference. The top six teams advance directly to the first round. Seeds 7 through 10 enter the play-in tournament, and teams seeded 11 through 15 miss the postseason and enter the NBA Draft Lottery.

This free 2026 NBA playoff bracket predictor uses current DraftKings championship odds as the team-strength signal for each best-of-7 series. Before the playoff field is finalized, the bracket starts from live standings. After the real first-round field is confirmed, the page restores that verified playoff field and the matching play-in results.

Play-In Tournament

Each conference runs three play-in games before the main bracket opens. Game A (#7 vs #8): the winner locks in as the #7 seed. The loser drops to Game C. Game B (#9 vs #10): the winner advances to Game C. The loser is eliminated. Game C (loser of Game A vs winner of Game B): the winner earns the #8 seed and faces the #1 seed in the first round. Those real play-in outcomes are automatically restored on page load and after Reset.

Championship Odds and Win Probability

Each team's series win probability comes from its current DraftKings championship odds, converted to implied probability. Any head-to-head series is rated by comparing the two teams directly: if Team A has implied title probability pA and Team B has pB, Team A's base series probability is pA / (pA + pB). The Upset Factor slider (0–100%, default 20%) blends that base probability toward 50/50, adding variance without removing the market signal entirely.

Round Structure

After the play-in, 16 teams advance: 8 per conference, seeded 1 through 8. The first round pairs 1v8, 2v7, 3v6 and 4v5 in each conference. Conference semifinals cut each side to two teams. Conference finals produce one champion per side. The NBA Finals determines the league champion. Home-court advantage belongs to the higher seed in every round.

Controls and Export

Simulate This Series opens a series popup for any individual matchup. Simulate All resolves every available game from the earliest unlocked round forward. Reset restores the real current playoff state while keeping live standings in place. Reset Playoffs temporarily clears all winners so you can replay the play-in and playoffs from scratch for that page session only. On desktop, scroll to zoom and drag to pan. On mobile, pinch to zoom. The Export menu offers Print, HD PNG download and clipboard copy for sharing your bracket at any stage.
