NBA Playoff Seeding, Standings, and What the Numbers Mean

How NBA Conference Standings and Playoff Seeding Work

The NBA regular season determines postseason seeding for all 30 teams across the Eastern and Western Conference. The top six teams in each conference earn a direct playoff berth, seeded 1 through 6 by win percentage. Teams seeded 11 through 15 miss the postseason entirely and enter the NBA Draft Lottery, where lower seeds receive better odds at the top pick. This standings page shows where every team stands in real time, making it easy to track the playoff race, the play-in bubble, and the lottery picture at the same time.

How the NBA Play-In Tournament Works

Seeds 7 through 10 enter the play-in tournament. The 7-seed hosts the 8-seed for the right to become the official 7-seed, while the 9-seed hosts the 10-seed in an elimination game. The loser of 7 vs. 8 then hosts the winner of 9 vs. 10 for the final playoff spot as the 8-seed. That is why the line between 6 and 7 matters so much in the standings table above.

What Games Behind, Streak, and Point Differential Mean

Within each conference, the top seed earns home-court advantage in every playoff series where they have the better record. Division titles are still tracked and reflected in clinch badges, though division standings no longer factor into playoff seeding. Games behind (GB) is calculated relative to the conference leader for conference standings and relative to the overall league leader in the Overall tab. A team with fewer wins and more losses trails by more games even if their schedule has been uneven.

Points per game (PPG), opponent PPG (OPP), and point differential (DIFF) give a deeper read on team quality beyond the win-loss record. Point differential is widely considered one of the most predictive regular-season stats: teams that consistently outscore opponents tend to win at a more sustainable rate than teams living on close wins. A positive differential shown in green means a team is outscoring opponents on average; negative in red means they are being outscored.

Why Home and Road Record Matter in NBA Standings

Home and road records reveal how a team performs in different environments, which matters when projecting playoff series outcomes. Last ten games (L10) and current streak (STRK) capture recent momentum, and late-season movement can shift both playoff seeding and draft lottery position. For teams outside the postseason picture, the Team Pick Simulator models the lottery odds across 1,000 Monte Carlo trials, while the NBA Bracket Simulator shows how current standings map to the playoff bracket.
